Count words, characters, and reading time
Word limits and character limits answer different questions. Know which one a form or publication requires before trimming a draft.
Words and characters
The Word Counter treats whitespace-separated groups as words. Character totals include punctuation and spaces unless you use the count without whitespace. The sentence “One two three.” has three words and fourteen characters under these rules.
Why counters can disagree
Different applications treat hyphens, apostrophes, emoji, line breaks, and non-space-separated languages differently. FreeToolzHub’s basic character count uses JavaScript string length, which counts UTF-16 code units. A displayed emoji can occupy more than one unit.
A reliable workflow
- Paste the final plain-text draft into the tool.
- Check the relevant count and leave a small margin below a strict limit.
- Revise unnecessary wording without losing meaning.
- Paste into the destination and verify its own counter before submitting.
Reading time is an estimate
Fixed reading speeds are useful for rough planning, not precise timing. Technical content, language, familiarity, accessibility needs, and interruptions all affect reading speed. Read the draft aloud or time a representative section when timing matters.
