NASA lost a $125M Mars orbiter to a pounds-vs-newtons mix-up. Your stakes are smaller — a wrong fabric order, a mis-dosed recipe, a furniture piece that doesn't fit — but the failure mode is identical: units that look similar and aren't.

The classic traps

  • US vs UK gallons. A US gallon is 3.785 L; an imperial gallon is 4.546 L — a 20% difference that ruins fuel and liquid calculations.
  • Ounces: weight vs volume. An ounce (weight, 28.3 g) and a fluid ounce (volume, ~29.6 mL) are different quantities entirely. Recipes mix them freely; you shouldn't.
  • Tons. Metric tonne (1000 kg), US short ton (907 kg), UK long ton (1016 kg). Contracts have gone to court over this one.
  • Miles vs nautical miles — 1.61 km vs 1.85 km.

Area and volume scale differently

The most common DIY error: converting a length factor and applying it to area. One metre is 3.28 feet, but one square metre is 3.28² = 10.76 square feet, and one cubic metre is 35.3 cubic feet. Whenever the unit is squared or cubed, the conversion factor is too. Flooring, paint coverage and soil orders all live or die on this rule.

Temperature is not a ratio

Doubling 10°C does not give "twice as hot," and you can't convert °C to °F with a single multiplier — the scales have different zero points (F = C × 9/5 + 32). Any mental shortcut except the formula (or a converter) fails. The only interval where they agree: −40° is the same in both.

A five-second checklist

  1. Write the unit on every number — most errors happen to "naked" numbers.
  2. Sanity-check the direction: converting metres to feet should make the number bigger. If it shrank, you divided instead of multiplying.
  3. Watch for squared/cubed units and square/cube the factor.
  4. For anything financial, convert twice — once by tool, once by rough mental estimate — and require them to agree.
