The two ways an "online tool" can work

When you use a typical convert-or-compress website, your document usually takes a round trip: it's uploaded to the company's servers, processed in their data centre, then downloaded back to you. That works, but it means your file — which might be a contract, a medical form, or a passport scan — has been copied onto a computer you don't control.

Local-first tools skip the trip entirely. Modern browsers are powerful. They can read a file, transform it, and hand it back without ever sending it anywhere. The processing runs in the same tab you're looking at, using your own device's power.

How local processing works

When you drop a file onto one of our tools, the browser loads it into memory on your machine. The tool's code — which downloaded once when the page opened — runs right there, reads the bytes, does the conversion or compression, and produces a new file for you to download. At no point is the file transmitted across the internet.

A simple test proves it: load a tool, then disconnect from the network. Everything still works, because there was never a server in the loop for your document. The only thing that needs the internet is loading the page itself.

Why this is more private

• No copies on someone else's disk. Your file isn't stored, cached, or backed up on a server you can't see.
• Nothing to leak. A tool that never receives your file can't lose it in a data breach.
• No "we may use your data" clause to worry about. There's no upload to attach terms to.
• It's faster, too. Skipping the upload and download of a large file often makes local processing quicker than the server round trip.

What still touches the network

We believe in being precise, so here's the honest full picture. Loading the page downloads the tool's code and a few standard libraries — that's normal web traffic, and it's the code coming to you, not your file going out. Basic, privacy-respecting analytics may count which tools are popular in aggregate. And your file? That stays on your device.

A small number of features that genuinely need heavy server power (the kind of thing a browser can't do alone) are always clearly labelled on the tool itself, so you're never surprised. The overwhelming majority — PDF, image, text, developer and conversion tools — are fully local.
