"I need 75% attendance" sounds simple until you're trying to work out, mid-semester, whether you can afford to miss Friday's class. The answer depends on how many classes have already happened — and that changes every week.
Why the same rule gives a different answer over time
A required attendance percentage applies to your whole term, but you experience it one class at a time. Early in a term, missing one class barely moves your percentage; late in a term, the same single absence can drop you below the threshold, because there are fewer remaining classes to average it out. That's why "can I skip today?" needs a real calculation, not a rule of thumb.
Enter classes attended, total held, and your requirement to see exactly where you stand.
Open Attendance CalculatorThe two questions that matter
"How many more can I skip?"
If you're comfortably above the requirement, there's a maximum number of additional classes you can miss while staying above it — not infinite, because each future class also adds to the total the requirement is measured against. This number shrinks as the term progresses even if you don't miss anything.
"How many must I attend to recover?"
If you've dropped below the requirement, there's a minimum number of consecutive classes you need to attend to climb back above it — and it's often more than people expect, because you're not just fixing the past, you're offsetting it against future classes too.
Why "just wait and see" is risky
Attendance math is deceptively nonlinear near the deadline — a couple of classes near the end of term can swing you from safely above the line to below it, especially if a required review week or exam-prep session gets marked as a normal class. Checking the actual number is more reliable than trusting a gut feeling of "I've been going most of the time."
Do this at the start of the term
Know your institution's exact requirement (75%? 80%?) and total number of scheduled classes before the term is half over. That way, if you do need to miss a class for a legitimate reason, you can check in advance exactly how much room you have — rather than finding out the hard way in week 12. Our Attendance Calculator gives you both numbers instantly: how many more you can skip, or how many you need to attend to recover.
