A good GIF is short, sharp and surprisingly small. A bad one is a blurry 20MB monster that takes forever to load. The difference is four settings — here's how to get them right.
Why GIFs get huge
Unlike modern video, the GIF format stores frames inefficiently and is limited to 256 colours per frame. That means file size explodes with three things: length, frame rate, and dimensions. A 10-second, 30fps, full-width GIF can easily be larger than the original video. The art of a great GIF is spending your bytes wisely.

1. Length: keep it under ~5 seconds
GIFs are for a single moment — a reaction, a loop, a quick demo. Trim to the essential seconds before converting. A tight 3-second loop is more effective and a fraction of the size of a rambling 15-second clip.
2. Frame rate: 10–15fps is plenty
Video runs at 24–60fps, but GIFs look fine at 10–15. Halving the frame rate roughly halves the size, and for most clips the eye barely notices. Only bump it higher for fast, smooth motion where choppiness would show.
3. Dimensions: shrink to where it'll be seen
A GIF embedded in a chat or article rarely needs to be more than 480–600px wide. Downscaling is the single biggest size saver — halving both width and height cuts the pixel count to a quarter. Export at the size it will actually display.
4. Colour: let the palette adapt
Because GIF caps at 256 colours, a smart converter builds a palette optimised for your clip rather than using a generic one. That keeps gradients and skin tones from banding into ugly stripes. If your GIF looks posterised, an adaptive palette is the fix.
A quick recipe
- Trim to the 2–4 seconds that matter.
- Set frame rate to 12fps (raise only if motion looks choppy).
- Scale width to ~480px.
- Export with an adaptive palette and check the result loops cleanly.
Follow that and you'll get a crisp GIF that's a few hundred kilobytes instead of many megabytes.
When you shouldn't use a GIF at all
If your clip has lots of colour, gradients or longer than a few seconds of motion, a short MP4 or WebM video will look better and be smaller — most platforms now autoplay silent video in place of GIFs. Reach for GIF when you specifically need the universal, no-player-needed, always-loops behaviour. For everything else, keep it as video and maybe just compress it instead.
